Database Entry[]
The ruins of a bygone civilization covered in green Dust. The cutting edge technology of the times long forgotten is hiding somewhere in these massive tombs of cities and states. Many things have long been looted, but the hardest-to-find items are waiting for someone to give them a second life.
Access[]
Underdust locations can only be accessed by riding a lift down to the surface. There exists the Descent to the Underdust location variant as well as the Overgrown Surface Lift.
Oxygen[]
The entire area outside of the lift is considered toxic, and you need an oxygen tank to survive. If you run out of oxygen in this area, you will die. Players have both a small capacity because of their suit and a Small Oxygen Tank by default, and can later upgrade to a Medium Oxygen Tank and a Large Oxygen Tank for a longer possible duration of safe exploration.
Oxygen cannot regenerate by itself. Your means of refilling are the following:
- Returning to the lift. This area is considered a safe zone.
- Consuming a Breathnut which can be found within the area, albeit uncommonly.
- Using an Oxygen Refill Station, which requires a Crystal Battery to power, but can be used infinitely after you have done so.
Structure[]
This is not meant to tell you how to fully navigate 100% the Underdust, but instead to give you a general idea of what can be found in the area for the Underdust Lab.
Lift[]
This is your starting zone after descending to the surface. Inside you can find Old Storage Boxes, an Organic Printer, and the lift controls. Neither the boxes nor the printer can be picked up, but they can be scanned and used.
Activating the lift controls will take you back to the Lift tower, the process for which is considered a loading screen so performance issues may arise while the lift is in motion.
Underdust Alleys[]
The Alleys zone covers everything surrounding the lift when you exit. While the alleys are technically a fixed zone in terms of how they look and what they provide, the direction the lift opens will vary from site to site, so things may seem different between different visits. In addition, metal walls as well as Blockades can spawn where they didn't before when visiting a new site, so your approach to resolving entry to different areas will vary the more sites you visit.
The overwhelming majority of Resources to be found will be in this zone, tucked away in nooks and crannies, hidden away in bins, thrown between cracks in the walls- they are everywhere. One alley is guaranteed to contain the Wrecked Upgrade Station, while another will contain the Wrecked Storage Box, both of which you can scan for research. Other alleys can contain Impious Mantis corpses that are a source of Chitin. Higher levels of the alleys contain a Medium Oxygen Tank you can scan for research.
Traversal to the Laboratory requires you to find your way upwards, whereas traversal down to the Tunnels will be blocked by Icedew at all possible access points.
This area contains an Oxygen Refill Station within each alleyway, and some upper levels.
Underdust Laboratory[]
After climbing up high enough and navigating past metal wall panels as well as metal beams, you will find yourself at the Laboratory. Here you will find a Wrecked Virus Sample Analyzer that you can scan for research.
This area contains a single Oxygen Refill Station.
Underdust Tunnels[]
After successfully bypassing the Icedew blocking passageways by crafting a Hypothermia Booster out of Honey, you will find yourself in the Tunnels. The tunnels span underneath the entirety of the Alleys, and some can lead to ladders that can take you to previously inaccessible areas in the alleys. Within the tunnels, more Impious Mantis corpses can be found, as well as bulbous plants lining the walls that act as a source of Plant Resin.
This area contains a single Oxygen Refill Station at the center of the tunnels. Past the refill station and beyond a metal panel that blocks the way, you can find an area that typically houses more Resin sources.
Underdust Core[]
If it is your first time visiting an Underdust location, then even farther beyond is an additional scripted story section that cannot be revisited once completed. Here, you will find the Friendly Insect, and have your first encounter with a living Impious Mantis, as well as progressing the Story.
You can return back to the elevator immediately from any point of the Underdust by using Unstuck command from the menu.
